Update from Todd E. Druley, M.D., Ph.D. “Eli’s STAND against childhood cancer”

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for contacting me. What can I say? You know how I feel. I am deeply honored and humbled in your faith and interest in our research, and we want to do everything possible to not only understand how to cure more children with these horrible cancers, but to honor Eli’s memory. Everyone who contributes to Eli’s legacy feels exactly the same way as I do. Clearly, your long list of generous donors is evidence that Eli touched a lot of lives and left a big hole in a lot of hearts.  You might be aware that we are in the midst of the toughest research funding climate in our nation’s history. As you’ve mentioned, even during high times, funding for children’s cancer research is limited and lags behind funding for many other diseases. I fear what’s going to happen as the amount of research dollars continue to shrink. Many promising researchers with unique ideas won’t have a chance. However, dedicated individuals such as yourself, your loving community in Oxford, PA and anyone who supports charitable organizations such as the Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation send the message that we’re not going to stand by and let children die unnecessarily because we’re joining the fight and support Eli’s wishes to find a cure. Thank you one and all from the bottom of my heart. I am truly honored.

 

I’m very much looking forward to meeting with you and your son, Austin, again on the morning of August 10th. I expect to have some new information from our work to share with you. I’m pleased to have some terrific new young scientists working on these questions in my lab, and I hope you’ll have a chance to meet my team. Also, you both met Dr. Bob Hayashi, our oncology division chief, last year and I’m hopeful that he and, perhaps, our chairman Dr. Alan Schwartz will be able to meet you and Austin during your visit. Eli’s STAND against childhood cancer!!!!

In honor and memory of our son Eli; Austin and I are making this trip to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.    We want to continue to stand with you in this fight.  We want to hand you the funds we have raised in person honoring our son’s memory.    This is an e-mail that I will send to thousands of people.  Our community is very supportive as everyone that had the privilege of knowing Eli loved him.   Eli raised well over $7,000.00 in his short life for the Alex’s foundation as well as our inspiration for our bELIeve team we raised over $30,000.00 in three years for the American Cancer Society.   I have learned plenty since my son passed away and I understand the lack of funds donated to Childhood Cancer research from some of these organizations.   Any publicity during our visit is perfect as I want to share back in Oxford, PA and around the world to other people that may have never met Eli, but he had touched their lives as they followed his story from 2007….    Also please click on the link bellow to my son’s web site this way you can get an idea of the things we have and will continue to do till the day I die to help find a CURE for childhood cancer!!!!

A new memory never to forget the ones locked in our heart

 PART ONE:

What started as a school project by our son Austin when he was in 7th grade a shared story with his little brother Eli a poster of the Bahamas, Royal Towers Hotel, Water parks and so much more. Not just a project turned in for a grade rather now to create a new memory. My wife Ruth sent out an email after our Angel Eli passed away searching for any photos that anyone may have taken of our Angel Eli. We received a phone call from Pastor Dave Willerup from the Nottingham Presbyterian Church of a photo he held close of Eli taken during vacation bible school,  you can see this photo under About Eli.  Eli was singing to GOD in this photo. Pastor Dave than shared a story of his own sister Amy and her husband Allan Benton. This would be the start of a poster becoming a reality you see Allan had ask me if we would like to create a new memory?  Well at that time we were not ready for any of this.  Then one day Austin said Dad I would like to go to the Bahamas and explained this poster I remembered that poster he explained how his brother knew about it. So today July 8th thanks to the Joy Hope Foundation http://www.joyhopefoundation.com/ we leave to turn that poster into a reality. We know Eli will be with us in spirit as we went to the cemetery yesterday and I let our Angel know we were making the trip and I know he will be with us. I will share photos after we return. I will not have a phone while we are away as I need this time with my son and he needs it with me.

PART TWO:

Austin and I want to thank Amy and Allan Benton from the Joy Hope Foundation  http://www.joyhopefoundation.com/index.php for sending us on this most amazing trip.  Not just a vacation, but a chance for Austin and I to spend much needed time together as Father and Son.  While our Angel Eli was fighting childhood cancer Ruth and I would be by Eli’s side for long periods of time.  One of those times was for 113 days.  Austin understood this and only cared that his little brother would  be okay.   When the time came to try and find a Bone Marrow match for Eli; Austin was tested and wanted to be the one to help save his brother.  Austin was not a match, and prayed for his brother every day.  A new memory was created during this trip to the Bahamas that Austin and I will hold for the rest of our lives.  While on the Atlantis Beach we looked to the sky and saw Eli’s name spelled out in the clouds we just smiled as we knew Eli was with us on this trip.  Now enjoy some photos from the Bahamas Paradise Island.

Ride for a brother to raise funds for our youth

Today 6/30/2012 I headed out to meet people I never met in my life.  How this got started was the Fight For Eli band was on 98 ROCK, and I was in Atlanta for my job.  I called into the show and got through as I told Eli’s story along with the band it touched many hearts.  I was then contacted by Sherry Shifflet, and Mike Valentin with the idea of a ride in memory of a dear friend and brother, David C. Kelley, they had lost in January of this year. (This is what Mike said)….. Some of us knew that we had to take this tragic loss and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding our loss and create a positive by finding a cause that… help the future for so many. ON JUNE 30, 2012, we will be hosting a Motorcycle Ride in the memory of our friend, David Kelley, and donating all proceeds to the ‘Brave Eli, Fighting Adolescent Lukemia and Cancer’ Foundation. BRAVEELI.COM. Please join us in raising money for a noble cause while remembering our friend. Well off I went at 9:30 am on my way to meet all of these fine people.  At the first location I met David’s mom as tears were hard to hold back we both know what it’s like to lose a son.  Mike talked to everyone, and then I told Eli’s story.  I don’t bELIeve their was a dry eye in the place, but I found it very important that my new friends get an understanding of the HERO Eli’s was.  We rode through Baltimore and Harford County! and I will tell you it was a blast.  My new friends have decided to make this an annual event as they to bELIeve in a cure.  They bELIeve their friend David would want everyone to be a part of something good a part of carrying out Eli’s wishes to find a cure for childhood cancer.
