A Message from CURLY THE BEAR

Hi I’m CURLY THE BEAR. First I want to thank every person that bought one of my friends and donated him back to Eli’s foundation.  It’s because of you this was possible.  Let me tell you all a story.  One day 2 ½ months ago a nice lady by the name of Amy Marshall a friend of the Matthews as well as a Avon Independent Sales Rep/Recruiter approached a good guy by the name of Paul Matthews with this idea of seeing if people would want to buy me and my friends but donate us back to the Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation, Inc.   Well Paul said let’s do it, and look out.  We were at the Nottingham Presbyterian Church, the Oxford Presbyterian Church and many other locations.  Well guess what?  The foundation in Eli’s memory was able to send 16 of my friends around the USA and 87 of us headed to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children on Friday November 23rd.  Paul, Austin, and Amy took us into the hospital and WOW!!!! They gave out 6 of my Bear buddies to some AMAZING children, and I overheard that guy Paul talking to child life and the rest of my buds are going to every child on the oncology floor and cardiac care.  Oh don’t any of you worry I will head out last so I see to it all of the children are loved, and let me tell ya my ARMY of CURLY BEARS love to HUG, Well got to go, next year Amy and Paul will be up to something else like this but not sure what furry friend it will be until then take care my friends Love CURLY!!!!

Paul, Austin and Amy, Thank you for your generosity with the donation of Curly the Bear for patients admitted to the hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant units at A.I. We appreciate your understanding our guidelines and policies about donors not going bedside to deliver directly to patients.  I wanted to let you know, I delivered 12 bears throughout the day today to patients that were able to have one.  There were nine girls ranging in age from 2 years old to 15 years old and three boys, ages 6, 16 and 18.  Even the teenagers accepted the bear with smiles!  I’m sure Eli is watching over you all and is proud of the legacy you are helping carry on in his name.  We will continue to deliver bears to patients admitted on the service as well as to patients that are on our cardiac unit as appropriate. Take care of yourselves, Cathy Cathy Akins, CCLSLevel III Child Life SpecialistNemours Center for Cancer and Blood DisordersNemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children1600 Rockland RoadWilmington, Delaware 19803
These are some wonderful children that we sent CURLY THE BEAR to around the USA

Written by Leslie Hernandez,

The Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation, Inc. was established in February, 2011, in loving memory of my nephew, Eli, who passed away at the age of 10 from leukemia. He battled the disease since being diagnosed in 2007; through two remissions, two relapses, and a bone marrow transplant. The Eli Seth Matthews Leukemia Foundation, Inc.  raises funds to fight childhood cancers and has given two grants to the genetic research team of Dr. Todd Druley in St. Louis, MO.   Eli bELIeved in a cure, and his foundation will continue to work to find a cure for others.  Your Denim Day donations will go toward finding the cure to childhood cancers.  Thank You.

November 27th

To every person reading this I’m asking you to do something for our Angel Eli’s Birthday.  November 27th Eli would have been 12 years old.  Eli’s favorite colors were red and black so what I would love for you to do between now and the 27th is find a red or black balloon write a note on it, and set it free on the 27th.  BraveEli.com is seen around the world so let’s send a message to Heaven on Eli’s Birthday.  Thank you all so much.  Eli’s Dad

Eli’s favorite will be at Miss Oxford Diner soon

Miss Oxford Diner was a place Eli liked to eat.  I remember after Eli’s Bone Marrow Transplant and he started eating again he said “Dad” can you order me a Hot Dog on a toasted bun with French Fries a pickle cut up, and a chocolate milk shake?  Of course I said yes and off I went to the Diner.   The owner Pam at the diner is adding Eli’s favorite to her new menu.  This means you will one day soon be able to go into Miss Oxford Diner and order Eli’s favorite.  I went to the diner today after texting Pam and told her I was on my way for Eli’s favorite.  It was much needed today as I was a bit down and thinking of how happy Eli was when I brought that to him lifted my spirit a bit.   Thank you to everyone at Miss Oxford Diner for your true kindness, and for all your help in this fight against childhood cancer in Eli’s memory.

SACRED HEART CYO VOLLEYBALL SCORES AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER

UPDATE: THIS EVENT RAISED $400.00 IN THIS FIGHT AGAINST CHILDHOOD CANCER

Matthew McCarry one of the coaches of the Sacred Heart CYO Volleyball team approached me a couple months ago asking if they could dedicate this Volleyball season to our Angel Eli’s foundation.   They wanted to help in the fight against childhood cancer, and they did!  Last night we were invited to join the team at the Sacred Heart gym.  We get there and the girls come out wearing Eli’s foundation shirts custom made with a childhood cancer ribbon, and there logo on the back; so heart touching.   There was a check presentation, and a ball signed by all three teams was given to me from the Volleyball team.    Before we left Austin, and I got in the team huddle that the girls do before each game with hands in the center we raised them and on the break we said bELIeve!!!!!!    The girls have been doing this all season.    Please take a look at the photos and check out the team, and all of the wonderful coaches that made this possible.

UPDATE: On April 11th I was asked to be the Guest speaker at an upcoming CYO banquet by Joe Shallow.  This is what Joe asks me……

  • Hi Paul,
Myself and the sacred heart CYO board would like to invite you to be the guest speaker at our upcoming CYO banquet. The banquet is being held Saturday may 11th at the technical high school on Pennocks bridge rd. at 6:30 pm. I know this is the same day as the Eli run so if you are not available we completely understand. We all feel you and your family have shown a tremendous amount of courage and spirit in your fight and feel that would make a great message for our youth. Please let me know if you are able to attend.
    Thanks,
    Joe

I responded with yes I would be happy to that it would be an honor.  Well I arrived around 6:20 PM and said a prayer and also ask my Angel Eli to be with me during my speech.  I did not have and note cards I only had my heart to speak to these wonderful children and parents.  As I was ready to leave the stage understanding this was my first guest speaker honor.  Every single person stood up and gave me a standing ovation.  I thought I was going to lose it as I dug deep within and said hold me up Eli.  Joe than ask me to hold up Paul we have something for you.  They gave me a beautiful shirt yea Black and Red and stitched in red it says Sacred Heart Saints.  I will were this with pride.  Than Joe said to help you fight what you call the MONSTER we want you to have this check for $300.00…..  I thanked everyone and sat down.  When I got in the van I said thank you Eli.  Oh and then I did breakdown a bit.  This is important to understand as hard as it is to speak to everyone about Eli and send a clear message I need to do it or the word says within.  Eli lives on in the hearts of many you see Eli is alive.

For the month of September we will donate $1.00 per haircut to anyone who walks in and says FIGHTING CHILDHOOD CANCER!!!!

(This is Childhood Cancer awareness month)

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

I look at every day as Childhood Cancer Awareness Day.  In 1997, parents who were brought together started discussing the creation of a universal awareness ribbon for children with cancer. Many colors were considered, but after much thought, it was decided that the color gold was the perfect choice for our cause. Gold is a precious metal, and our children are precious.  We must continue to fight this monster together.

  • Childhood cancers are the #1 disease killer of children – more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined.
  • Childhood cancer is not a single disease, but rather many different types that fall into 12 major categories. Common adult cancers are extremely rare in children, yet many cancers are almost exclusively found in children.
  • Childhood Cancers are cancers that primarily affect children, teens, and young adults. When cancer strikes children and young adults it affects them differently than it would an adult.
  • Attempts to detect childhood cancers at an earlier stage, when the disease would react more favorably to treatment, have largely failed. Young patients often have a more advanced stage of cancer when first diagnosed. (Approximately 20% of adults with cancer show evidence the disease has spread, yet almost 80% of children show that the cancer has spread to distant sites at the time of diagnosis).
  • Cancer in childhood occurs regularly, randomly, and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class, or geographic region.
  • The cause of most childhood cancers are unknown and at present, cannot be prevented. (Most adult cancers result from lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet, occupation, and other exposure to cancer-causing agents).
  • One in every 330 Americans will develop cancer by the age of 20. On the average, 12,500 children and adolescents in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year.
  • On the average, 1 in every 4 elementary school has a child with cancer. The average high school has two students who are a current or former cancer patient. In the U.S., about 46 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every weekday.
  • 47 Children are told every day they have cancer, and 7 will die.
  • Several childhood cancers continue to have a very poor prognosis, including: brain stem tumors, metastatic sarcomas, relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and relapsed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Why do I fight?  I fight so other parents don’t have to tell their babies they have cancer!  I fight so other parents don’t have to watch their children take their last breath! I fight for Eli to carry out his wishes to find a cure.

THIS IS WHY I FIGHT!!!! PLEASE HELP OUR FOUNDATION.
